Let’s Begin was commissioned by the Tesla Quartet and the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music for the Tesla Quartet “Alternating Currents” COVID-19 Commissioning Project. The three-minute string quartet takes inspiration from the theme found in Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet, Op. 18, No. 5, II. Andante cantabile, as it was the directive in the commission that I happily embraced. While writing this, the social unrest of 2020 was being experienced. Even though our society has attempted to rid the country of racism before, it is clear this work is never ending. This is a continued call to restart racial and social justice work anew.
